There has been considerable research regarding introducing an organic fertilizer or organic amendment into the soil. By introducing organic additives, one can enhance the overall bio-diversity of the soil environment. The process improves and stimulates the total biological health of the soil system. In turn, this reduces the conditions that favor many plant related problems.

The effectiveness of this approach can be rated by the energy content of the organic amendment being applied. The carbon to nitrogen ratio can define this energy level. The lower this ratio, the higher the energy levels. The higher the energy level, the more available the plant nutrients and nutritional content of the organic additive is to the soil microbes. Temperature, pH, moisture and oxygen levels impact the breakdown of these organic amendments. The ingredients selected can rate common bio-fertilizer energy levels. Carbohydrates & proteins have the highest rating followed by composted poultry manure and lastly bio-solids. (See Organic Ingredients for more detailed information.)

Independent university research has examined the overall benefits of these different types of bio ingredients. Research has concluded that bio fertilizers stimulate microbial populations that enhance rooting, reduce conditions that favor disease, improve nitrogen efficiency, reduce plant stress and improve water utilization. In short, the use of organic bio fertilizers improves soil health and turf quality.
